Micro-Habit Changes Can Improve Your Life!

By Kate Hesse

I love micro-habits! Making small changes not only feels doable, it also can create a snowball effect which can make a big impact on your life!

In today’s episode, I talk about one of my favorite micro-habits – breathwork.  You might know that I have a strong yoga practice.  Both on and off the mat, yoga helps me to maintain a sense of balance in my life.  And breathwork, or pranayama, is a big piece of that!

I have a number of guided breathwork practices on the blog, and if you’re ready to move beyond the audible exhale mentioned in today’s post, send me a message and I’ll help you find the right one for you!

The number one micro-habit that’s made a major improvement in my life is learning how to breathe.

That might sound funny – we all breathe – it just happens. But there’s a big difference between breathing to survive (what the body does on its own) and breathing to thrive (what we do consciously)!

use breathwork practices to. . .

  • Shift from fight, flight, or freeze, the sympathetic nervous system state to rest and digest, the parasympathetic nervous system state.
  • Think clearly and move away from anxiety and fear.
  • Get grounded and centered.
  • Deepen my meditation practice.

It’s powerful, but it isn’t complicated!

While breathwork is magic in the many ways it can improve your life, in practice, it really is as simple as paying attention and consciously breathing in and out.

If you want to get started, the audible exhale is a great introductory breathwork practice and it’s so simple you can do it anywhere and anytime.

To practice the audible exhale, simply inhale through your nose. Allow the breath to tunnel down into your belly. Feel your belly expand. Then release the breath through your mouth with an audible hhhhhh sound.

You can use the audible exhale any time you’re starting to feel a little stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious.  Even better, use it proactively, and stop what you’re doing every hour to take three audible exhales.

Learn more about the audible exhale, and check out a free guided visualization which can be used along with this breathwork technique.

I’m sending you a great big hug – you’ve got this!
