Why Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient science designed to help you find comfort and ease not only in your body, but also in your mind.

The goal of yoga isn’t about twisting yourself up like a pretzel!  Yoga in Sanskrit means yoke – the linking of breath and body to bring you into the present moment and create a sense of peace.

When you take a yoga class you’ll move and stretch your body.  And you’ll learn to calm and quiet your mind.  You’ll also stretch and strengthen muscles that you probably don’t use on a daily basis.  Not only is this great for your body,  but it gives you an opportunity to release any trapped emotions, tension, or trauma embedded in your body while in a safe space with someone trained to understand this process.

So if you’re looking for a holistic wellbeing tool, yoga is a great place to start.

What type of yoga do you offer?
What should I expect in a session?

What we in the Western world traditionally think of as yoga is actually asana, just one aspect of the eight-limbed practice of yoga. In my yoga classes you’ll experience not just asana (yoga poses/movement), but also pranayama (breathwork practices), pratyahara (turning your focus inward), and dharana (single pointed focus).

This might sound overwhelming, but I’ll be there to not only guide you through it all step-by-step in language you understand, but because these are private classes, I can tailor the experience to you.  I meet you where you’re at – you don’t need to have any prior yoga experience.

In practice, here’s what you’ll get:

  • We’ll start with a breathwork technique to help bring you into the space and prepare you for the session.
  • I’ll offer slow-flow hatha techniques (poses held for 3-5 breaths) combined with Yin and Restorative poses to help you achieve your goals for the session.
  • And we’ll end with nice long Savasana (final resting post) to help you integrate everything.
  • Depending on your interest, classes can also include a mantra (chanting) and mudra (hand positions) practice.

I offer 60 minute and 90 minute sessions based on the type of experience you’re looking for.

I can provide a yoga mat and any props you’ll need for your class.  However, I would strongly suggest acquiring your own mat as you may want to practice between classes, and it will be MUCH easier to do with a yoga mat.  You don’t need to purchase anything fancy, just a basic yoga mat will work!  During our classes, I’ll teach offer suggestions for household basics you can substitute when practicing on your own for any props we use.
