Energetic Housekeeping – why it matters and how to get started

By Kate Hesse

Energetic housekeeping hasn’t always been a part of my life.  And I haven’t always lived a life I loved waking up to.  There have been times when I wondered how exactly the world I woke up to each morning was actually my life (and not in a good way).

I was in my 30’s before I started to learn how to set healthy boundaries (and it took me years of experimenting to build my boundary muscle).  While I was seeking to build a life I loved, I was also carrying a lot of heavy and stagnant energy around with me.

Discovering a process for energetic housekeeping made a big difference in my journey to moving forward and making positive changes in my life.

This post is going to veer into what is often considered woo-woo territory.  If this makes you uncomfortable, I ask you to consider looking at what’s behind that discomfort, and ask yourself what would happen if you pushed against that edgy feeling and tried to read the whole post with an open mind?

If you’re a facts, and just the facts, kind of person, I want to remind you of the words of Polly the elf from Noelle – “Can you see love? Can you see sorrow? Can you see joy?”.  I believe it’s incredibly important to recognize that just because you can’t see or empirically prove something, it doesn’t make it any less real.

Why should you worry about energetic housekeeping

When we're surrounded by stagnant energy, we notice it as a sense of heaviness, causing us to feel tired, disconnected, and uninspired.Just like you regularly vacuum your house, scrub your bathroom and kitchen, and tidy up, it’s also important to regularly do some energetic housekeeping.

Think of a stream flowing freely over a rocky bed.  The water has a crisp clean sparkle to it.  But if you pile the rocks up and stop the flow of water, it becomes brackish, no longer looking or smelling clean.

Just like water, energy can become stuck and stagnant.  And just like when the rock dam is removed the stream again flows freely and the water becomes clean and fresh, once we clear out stagnant energy, clean energy begins to flow.

When you’re surrounded by stagnant energy you might feel it as a sense of heaviness, causing you to feel tired, disconnected, and uninspired.  Sometimes the stagnant energy is tied to a location, sometimes to a person, often, both.

If you’ve never done any energetic housekeeping (or worked with an energy worker to clear your personal energetic field), you might not realize how stale the energy around you is.  I encourage you to give this energetic clearing process a try.  Practice the routine consistently for a month with an open mind.  You might be surprised at the difference you feel.

Going beyond energetic housekeeping

This post and the energetic housekeeping routine are just the very tippy top of a great big mountain that is energy work and energetic theory.  This covers everything from quantum physics, the application of Einstein’s E = mc2, and energetic healing practices both ancient and modern.

If you’re looking to learn more about working with energy, there is so much to discover.  Check out this article on energetic healing modalities, book a Discovery Session with me to see if one-on-one work might be the right fit for you, or find a yoga class which focuses on the philosophical and energetic aspects of yoga (this is a great way to get information in bite sized pieces each class if you’re unsure you’re ready to dive right into this work).

How to develop an energetic housekeeping routine

Try adding the following practice to your current housekeeping routine.

Frequency of energetic housekeeping

If moving through your daily life feels like walking in the ocean, taking all your energy with each step, use this routine at least once a day (like washing the dishes).

However, if you feel like the air around you is as light and fresh as a spring breeze, incorporate this routine as often as you vacuum your house (although you can absolutely use it more often if you want).

The practice of energetic housekeeping

You want to be fully present in each step of this process. Do not rush through this - part of the spaciousness this routine brings comes from the intentionality of the process.Start your energetic housekeeping by lighting a smudge stick.  I prefer to use white sage, but there are any number of options available.  If you do not have access to smudge sticks at a local health food store, there are thousands of options on Etsy.

You’ll want not only a smudge stick, but also a dish or tray to catch any ash as you move through your house.  I have a dedicated shell I use for my smudge stick, pick something you find to be beautiful.

First smudge yourself, then the room you’re in, slowly, working your way through the house, smudge each room in your home.  If you’re unfamiliar with how to smudge, this is a great tutorial.  While it’s not mentioned in the video, be sure to smudge your whole body (top to bottom, front and back).

You want to be fully present in each step of this process.  Bring your full attention to smudging yourself and the room, move slowly and with purpose.  Do not rush through this – part of the spaciousness this routine brings comes from the intentionality of the process.

Slowly and with intention, recite the Detachment Blessing followed by the Protection Blessing (both listed below).  Visualize each piece of the blessing as you say it aloud.  You can speak the blessings either as you are smudging (easier if you have them memorized), before, or after smudging.  Experiment to find what feels right to you.  You can also repeat the Detachment Blessing multiple times during your energetic housekeeping if you feel so called.

After you’ve completed smudging your home and reciting both blessings, smudge yourself once more, then extinguish your smudge stick (be sure it’s completely out).  As you extinguish your smudge stick, give thanks to yourself for taking the time to clear yourself and your home in this way.

A note on the blessings

I started seeing an amazing energy worker during one of the darker points in my life.  She recognized some very heavy energy I was carrying along with me and recommended I use this Detachment Blessing to help clear it out.

I am spiritual but not religious.  My belief (not a fact, just a belief) is that spiritual beings came first, structured religion arose around them and incorporated them.

Throughout the world’s religions, similar archetypes appear over and over, including religions which were linguistically and geographically isolated.

While we traditionally associate the four archangels called upon in these blessings with Judeo-Christian theology, I view them as something much more ancient.

Please note this is a BELIEF – I add it here only to encourage those who do not subscribe to a Judeo-Christian theology to not discount these blessings or their power because of this traditional association.

Detachment Blessing

Detachment Blessing

I call upon the Archangels, Gabriel, Uriel, Michael, and Ariel, to sever, disconnect, and remove, any and all energies and entities which do not serve my highest good and do not serve the highest light from my body, my aura, and my field, this space, this room, and this house.

Please sever, disconnect, and remove these energies and entities now.

Please take these energies and entities away from here, deep into the center of the Universe where they are surrounded by love, transformed into love, and dispersed, never to return to my body, my aura, my field, this space, this room or this house ever again.  Thank you Archangels.

Protection Blessing

Protection Blessing

I call upon the Archangels, Gabriel, Uriel, Michael, and Ariel to hold the four corners of this space, this room, and this house, against any and all energies and entities which do not serve my highest good and do not serve the highest light.  Thank you Archangels.

Building your routine

I’m so excited to share with you my Energetic Housekeeping Printable which includes basic instruction on the process of energetic housekeeping and both blessings.

Sign up below to get your copy.  Print it out, and put it somewhere you’ll be able to easily refer to it.  While I have both blessings memorized, I also keep them posted in my office as a reminder to do my energetic housekeeping on a regular basis.

Posting this on your chore chart, laminating it (or sliding it into a plastic sheet protector) and placing it with your cleaning supplies, or adding it to your paper planner are all great options to keep this reminder front and center as you develop this new routine.

Wishing you the ease and sense of lightness that energetic housekeeping brings to you and your home.
